Register vSphere plug-ins...

<RANT ON>
VMWare documentation is pretty poor at the best of times (see the replacing the self signed certificate documentation for confirmation) and registering a simple plug in is also one of them.

There is pretty much no "easy" way of doing this.  However the documents do not really tell you this.

Google to the rescue and a rather naff looking but effective application by the name of...Plugin Wizard for vSphere vCenter let the naffness begin!  From http://www.virtualizeplanet.com/.

Rubbish interface (tab groups anyone?) and unwieldy name aside this was the ONLY application/script/cmdlet that I could find (in a days browsing) that actually did what it should...or more to the point what I needed.

The first "Step" is to make an xml file describing your plugin to vSphere, I didn't use this application to do this as this is pretty easy and notepad is miles better...however "step 2" is something which none of the other wizards do.  I don't know if I am using them wrong.  Possibly.  However this step is the crucial and required step if you want to register your plug in with the vSphere server so that all clients get the access.  The key bit is the URL to XML file - or in PWVV (as I now call it) Url to XML file: field.

This lets vSphere known where to go to get your definition.

Job done.  Thanks to the author of this app if only they could make it look nicer :)

** UPDATE**

Just visited http://read.virtualizeplanet.com/?cat=9 the author has renamed and updated the application, it looks miles better than version 1.0 which is great!  Good luck to them!
